A silicone patch is molded, like PVC, but in a softer and thinner material that stretches with the garment instead of resisting it. That is the whole reason to choose it. On performance fabric, athletic wear and technical shells, a firmer badge fights the way the garment moves, and silicone does not. Like every molded construction, the outline comes from the mold, so a die-cut silhouette with no border is normal here.
Silicone and PVC are not the same material and one is not a substitute for the other. Silicone is more flexible and sits thinner on the garment, which costs it some relief depth. It carries up to 12 colors and three relief levels, so there is real dimension available, just less of it than a sculpted PVC piece gives you. If the design needs deep, defined relief and the garment can take a firmer badge, PVC is the better answer and we will say so.
We also make silicone and TPU heat transfers, which are a different product rather than a variation on this one. A transfer is applied directly to the garment with no patch to attach, so it sits flatter still and behaves differently in the wash. Application settings depend on the construction and the garment together, so we supply them with the order rather than publishing a single recipe. Send the artwork and the garment, and the proof will show relief, colors, edge and attachment.

How It Compares
vs. PVC patches
Two molded materials, not two versions of one. PVC is firmer and holds deeper, more defined relief, which is what gives a sculpted morale patch its definition. Silicone is softer, thinner and stretchier, which is what lets it live on performance fabric without fighting the garment. Neither is a substitute for the other, and the garment usually decides before the artwork does.

vs. A heat transfer
A transfer is applied straight to the garment, so there is no separate piece and nothing to sew or swap. It is flatter and lighter than any patch, and it suits high volumes of apparel decoration. A patch can be moved, replaced or ordered ahead of the garments. If you want the design to be a discrete object, order the patch; if you want it to be part of the garment, order the transfer.

vs. Embroidery on stretch fabric
Embroidery adds structure to whatever it covers, which is exactly what you do not want on a stretch panel. It can be done with the right stabilizer and placement, but it restricts the fabric locally and can pull under load. Silicone flexes instead. Where a garment has both stretch panels and stable ones, the answer is often embroidery on the stable area and molded work on the stretch area.
