A morale patch is the one piece of insignia that exists to be chosen rather than issued. Squads, crews, workshops and creators make them, they get swapped and traded, and the design usually says something the formal insignia cannot. That freedom is the point, and it changes what matters in the order: readability at a small size on a gear field, and an attachment that lets the patch come off.
Almost all of these are hook-backed, which means the loop field on your carrier, pack or jacket sets the finished size rather than a number you picked. Measure the usable field, not the panel edge to edge, and send that. If your gear has no loop field, say so, because the mating side is a separate item rather than something included by default.
The design side has one hard rule and one soft one. The hard rule is that the artwork has to be yours: original work, or something you are authorized to use. We will decline third-party logos, copied designs and marks you cannot show a right to. The soft rule is that morale patches are small and busy, and the most common disappointment is a design that read beautifully on screen and turned into noise at three inches. We check that on the proof.

One design for a group, usually hook-backed so it can move between carriers and garments. The size comes from the loop field on the gear people actually carry, which is worth checking across the group rather than measuring one set. Molded constructions are popular here because the surface wipes clean and the outline can be die-cut to the shape of the design.

Made to be given away and traded, which usually means a small quantity, a distinctive shape and a design that reads instantly. Die-cut molded shapes do well here because they stand out on a board of rectangles. Quantities are often small and there is no minimum, so a run of twenty five is a perfectly normal order.

A common hook-field size
Three inches is a size a great many morale patches land on, largely because it suits the loop fields on common carriers and packs. It is a useful reference point rather than a standard, and the number that actually matters is the usable field on your own gear. Measure it and send that, because fields differ between manufacturers and between products from the same manufacturer.
Then check the design against that width. Morale artwork tends to be detailed, and three inches is not much room for a scene, a motto and a joke at the same time. If the smallest element will not hold, the useful answers are a larger patch, fewer elements, or a construction that carries finer detail. We will tell you which applies at proof stage.
For a die-cut shape with defined relief that wipes clean, choose molded PVC patches. For a softer, thinner molded badge on stretch or lightweight gear, choose custom silicone patches. For thread texture and a traditional stitched look, choose custom embroidered patches.
How a morale patch is planned

Morale patches fail in two ways: they do not fit the gear they were made for, or the design turns into noise at the size it was actually made. These three prevent both.
The field, measured
The loop field on your carrier sets the size, not a standard. Measure the usable area rather than the panel edge to edge, because a patch cut to the full panel will overhang once it is pressed on.
Readable at the real size
We check the smallest element in the design at your finished width and say what holds. Morale artwork is usually busy, and cutting one element out is almost always a better answer than shrinking everything until nothing reads at all.

How It Compares
vs. Molded instead of stitched
Molded PVC gives a die-cut silhouette, defined relief and a surface that wipes clean, which is why it dominates this category. Embroidery gives thread texture and a traditional look, and it handles bold artwork well at a lower cost of change. Molded suits gear that lives outdoors. Stitched suits garments and anyone who wants the patch to look like a patch.

vs. Silicone instead of PVC
Silicone is softer, thinner and stretchier than PVC, which suits lightweight gear and stretch fabric where a firmer badge would sit proud. It holds less relief depth in exchange. PVC gives the defined, sculpted look most morale patches are after. These are two different materials rather than two grades of one.

vs. Formal unit insignia
Morale patches and formal insignia are ordered differently. Formal pieces are governed by criteria you supply and often need matched full-color and subdued versions. Morale patches are chosen rather than specified, and the constraints are the gear field and the artwork rights. If your requirement includes both, plan the whole set on the military page.
