A letterman jacket is not a single order. It is a first order followed by additions, sometimes over three or four years, and the pieces that arrive later have to match the ones already on the jacket. That is the actual problem this page is about, and it is why we plan the whole program at the first order even when you are only buying one letter today.
The chenille letter is usually the anchor. Everything after it is sized and colored against that piece: the activity insertions that sit inside or beside it, the year bars, the captain markers, the mascot or back panel. If the letter is made without knowing what is coming, the second and third pieces end up approximated rather than matched, and on a jacket that shows.
Material detail belongs on the chenille page, and this page stays with the order. What is worth saying here is that chenille wants bold forms, so anything with fine detail in it is added in embroidery over the top rather than looped. That is a normal build. The small symbol that identifies the sport or activity, sitting inside or beside the letter. These carry more detail than chenille can hold, so they are embroidered rather than looped, and that is the normal build rather than a compromise. Where a student earns several, plan the placement early so the fourth one still has somewhere sensible to go.

A year bar made in one order and another made two years later have to look like a pair, and that only happens if the letter height, colors and border finish were recorded at the start. Back Patches for Jacket Mascots
The large piece on the jacket back, usually a mascot or a school name, and the one with the most room for artwork. At this scale weight matters: a fully covered embroidered panel is heavy on a wool jacket. Measure the flat back panel between the seams and tell us what else is going on the back, since the layout has to leave room for it.

Chenille Patches for Texture and Construction
Chenille is looped yarn on a felt base, and it gives depth and softness nothing else matches. It wants bold shapes at around three inches and up, and it does not hold small type, which is added in embroidery over the top. If the design is mostly fine detail, embroidery on its own is the better construction and we will say so before you order.

Chenille Patches for Graduation Numerals
Large numerals marking a graduating class, often paired with the letter or worn on the sleeve. Chenille suits bold numerals well, while a class label in small type is embroidered alongside. Order the numerals with the class letters where you can, so the colors and felt outlines match across the whole jacket rather than being approximated from a finished piece later.

The letter, top to bottom
Six inches of letter height is a common figure for a chest letter and a useful starting point rather than a rule. What decides it is the jacket, specifically the flat chest panel on the size the student actually wears, and whether an activity insertion has to fit inside the letter. Measure the panel rather than working from a garment size.
Everything added later is sized against that letter. Year bars, captain markers and activity pieces all take their proportions from it, so getting the letter right matters more than getting any individual addition right. If the program will run several years, record the finished dimensions somewhere you will still have them, and we will hold them at our end too.

A letterman order is judged years after it is placed, at the moment the second and third pieces go onto the same jacket. These three are what make that work.
The letter sets the scale
Every later piece takes its proportions from the first letter, so the letter is sized against the actual jacket panel rather than a standard. Get that one wrong and every addition after it inherits the mistake.
Colors are recorded, not remembered
We hold the color references and the finished dimensions so a year bar made in the third year matches the letter made in the first. Matching from a photograph two years later is far less reliable.
Chenille plus embroidery
The bold form is looped and the detail is stitched over it. That split is decided at proof stage and shown to you, so nobody is surprised by which parts of the design are soft and which are flat.
