Chenille is looped yarn on a felt base, and it is the deep, fuzzy texture on the front of a letterman jacket. It is a material choice, not a program: this page is about what chenille does and where it works. The jacket order itself, with its letters, activity insertions and year bars, is a separate conversation and we handle that too.
The texture is the reason to choose it and the reason it has limits. Loops are physically large compared with a stitch, so chenille wants bold, simple forms with real weight to them. A block letter, a numeral or a heavy mascot silhouette reads beautifully. Thin outlines, small type and intricate detail do not, which is why most pieces combine the two: chenille for the shape, embroidery worked over it for the detail. Around 3 inches is the recommended minimum, because below that the loops stop being a texture and start being a problem.
We build in up to nine colors, and the felt base can be hand-cut to shape, which is what allows a letter to be a letter rather than a letter inside a box. Send the artwork and the finished height you want, and the proof will show the letter, the colors, the outline and the backing. Tell us the garment as well, since a chenille piece is heavy and that is what decides how it is attached.

How It Compares
vs. Embroidered patches
Embroidery is flatter, finer and far better at detail. Chenille is thicker, softer and unmistakable across a room. The practical difference is what each one can hold: embroidery will carry a motto, a date and a small mascot in three inches, and chenille will carry a letter. Cost and weight follow the same split, since a chenille piece uses more material and sits heavier on the garment.

vs. A hybrid build
Most good chenille pieces are not pure chenille. The bold form is looped, and the parts that need definition, an outline, a sport symbol, a year, are embroidered on top. That is a normal build rather than an upgrade, and it is usually what people are picturing when they describe a varsity letter they have seen.
