Custom EMS patches identify ambulance services, rescue squads and the EMS side of combined fire departments, on shoulders, chests and jackets. They are usually their own artwork rather than a copy of the fire shield, and the order goes well when they are planned to sit beside the department emblem without looking borrowed from somewhere else.
Legibility decides most EMS patches. The service name and location line are often the smallest type on the design, and a patch on a working uniform is read quickly and at a distance. We check that lettering at your finished size and say plainly whether it holds, and we match color references and edge finish to the shield where the two are worn together.
Two limits apply. Some EMS symbols carry their own usage rules, so you confirm your service is entitled to the marks in your artwork. And these are uniform and station-wear patches, not protective equipment components: we make no flame-resistance, PPE or certification claim, and they are not intended for turnout gear. If you are unsure about a symbol, check with the organization that governs it before sending the artwork. Everything else, including the lettering check and the match to the shield, is part of every quote we prepare.

In a combined department, the number that shapes the order is two: the fire shield and the EMS emblem worn by the same organization. They do not need identical artwork, but they need shared color references, a matching edge finish and consistent lettering, or the EMS patch looks like it came from somewhere else.
Size comes from the garment and the placement. Measure the shoulder or chest space on the uniforms your crews actually wear, and send the service name and location line exactly as they should read. That lettering is the first thing we check at your finished size, before any other part of the proof.
For shoulder emblems with thread texture and bold artwork, choose embroidered service emblems. For small service names and location lines, choose woven construction for small location lines.

EMS patches are read quickly, worn hard and often sit beside another department's emblem. These are the three checks we make on every EMS order before production begins, whatever the construction.
Lettering checked at size
The service name and location line are checked at your finished size first. If they will not hold, we say so and suggest woven construction, a larger patch or shorter wording before the proof is drawn.
Matched to the shield
Where an EMS emblem is worn with a fire department shield, we match color references and edge finish to it. Planning both together avoids an EMS patch that looks borrowed from another department entirely. Send the shield artwork or a photograph with the order.
Entitlement and limits
You confirm your service is entitled to every mark in the artwork. These are uniform patches: we make no flame-resistance, protective equipment or certification claim, and they are not intended for turnout or other protective gear. We would rather say so plainly.
