A magnetic patch holds through the fabric. One magnet sits behind the patch, a second goes inside the garment, and the two grip each other with the cloth in between. Nothing is pierced, nothing is stitched and nothing is pressed, which is why this is the backing for tailored jackets, good shirts and clothing that staff own themselves.
Two things decide whether it holds well: the thickness of the fabric and the weight of the patch. A thin shirt and a small badge is a strong pairing. A heavy wool coat and a large patch is not, because the magnets are further apart and the patch is pulling harder. There is no single weight limit we can publish for every garment, so we review the two together and tell you what we expect rather than promising a number.
There is one caution worth stating plainly. Magnets can affect cards, devices and equipment kept nearby, and they are not suitable for everyone. If there is any question about a medical device, choose a pin-back or hook-and-loop version instead. We are not in a position to advise on that, and we would rather say so than reassure you. Send the garment and the artwork, and the proof will confirm the size, the magnet placement and the finished weight.

vs. Pin back patches
A pin is cheaper, grips anything and never slides, and it costs you a hole in the fabric every time. On a work shirt or a bag that is irrelevant. On a tailored jacket or a silk blouse it is permanent damage. Pins also hold heavier patches than magnets do, since they do not care about fabric thickness. Choose by the garment rather than by the patch.

vs. Hook and loop patches
Hook-and-loop grips harder and holds larger and heavier patches than magnets do, and it is unaffected by fabric thickness. The price is that a loop field has to be sewn onto the garment first, which is a modification. Magnets need nothing added at all. If the garment can be altered once, hook-and-loop is stronger. If it cannot be touched, magnets are the only removable option left.

vs. A large or heavy patch
This is the honest limit rather than a rival product. Magnetic hold falls away as the patch gets heavier and as the fabric gets thicker, and the two often go together, since a big patch usually ends up on a coat. There is no universal weight limit we can publish, because it depends on the garment. We review the size and weight against the fabric before we quote.
Keep magnetic patches small and light. For a large piece, choose hook-and-loop or sewing.
