A pin-back patch is a normal fabric patch with pin hardware fitted to the back. It is worth being clear about that, because people arrive on this page looking for metal pins and those are a different product entirely. Here you get the texture and scale of a patch, in whatever construction you choose, with a fitting that lets it go on and come off in seconds.
The pin passes through the fabric, so it leaves a small hole. On a work shirt, a bag, a jacket or a lanyard that does not matter at all. On tailoring or fine fabric it does, and a magnetic version is the better answer there. The other thing the pin cares about is weight and shape: a heavy or long patch pivots around a single fitting, so hardware placement follows the patch rather than sitting in a default spot.

vs. Magnetic patches
Magnets leave no hole at all, which makes them the right choice for tailoring, fine fabric and clothing people own themselves. Pins are cheaper, grip regardless of fabric thickness and hold heavier patches without sliding. On a work shirt or a bag the hole is irrelevant and the pin wins on cost and security. On a wool blazer the magnet wins outright.

A clutch is one style of pin fitting rather than a separate product. Different fittings trade security against convenience: some hold more firmly and take longer to remove, others come off with a thumb. The right one depends on the weight and shape of the patch and on how often it is taken off, so we confirm the fitting at order time rather than defaulting to one.
