A sew-on patch is finished with an edge made to be stitched through rather than pressed on. It is the most durable attachment we offer and the one with the fewest fabric restrictions, which is why club colors, uniform programs and anything on leather end up here. There is no minimum, so a single back panel and a fifty-piece uniform run are both normal orders.
Stitching does not care about coatings, texture or heat sensitivity. That is the whole argument for it. What it does need is access to both sides of the fabric, which is straightforward on a flat jacket panel and awkward on a lined garment or a finished cap. It also needs a patch edge the needle can pass through, so molded constructions are a separate conversation rather than an assumption.
Hand sewing suits one jacket and gives you complete control of placement. A machine suits a program, holds a straighter line and is far faster across fifty garments. Either way, position the patch on the wearer before anything is stitched, because a patch that is half an inch off reads as wrong even when nobody can say why. Send the artwork and the garment, and the proof will confirm the finished size, the edge and the placement.

How It Compares
vs. Iron-on patches
Iron-on is faster and needs no skill, and it holds the patch flat while you work. Sewing takes longer and survives more. The fabric usually decides rather than the preference, since heat adhesive rules out leather, coated shells and heat-sensitive synthetics entirely. On garments that can take both, pressing and then stitching the edge outlasts either method used alone.
Iron-on for speed on cotton. Sewing for permanence and difficult fabrics.
vs. Machine sewing
Hand sewing gives complete control and suits a single garment, a curved placement or an awkward spot a machine cannot reach. A machine is faster, straighter and consistent across a run, which is what a uniform program needs. The tradeoff is access: a machine needs the panel flat and open, so a lined jacket or a finished bag often forces the hand-sewn answer.

vs. Hook and loop patches
Hook-and-loop is the opposite decision. It exists so the patch can come off, which is what you want for insignia that changes and exactly what you do not want for club colors. It also needs a mating loop field on the garment or gear, which is a separate item. Sewing is permanent and needs nothing added to the garment beyond thread.
Sew when the patch should stay. Hook-and-loop when it should be swappable.
